Outdoor Film Photography Workshop (2 Part Series)

  • Kelley Point Park North Kelley Point Park Road Portland, OR, 97203 United States (map)

Join Columbia Slough Watershed Council’s Education Director, Jennifer Starkey, and Reneé Heister of Blue Moon Camera for a two part outdoor film photography workshop where participants will learn how to use this 100% mechanical classic medium format camera in a beautiful place surrounded by waterways. This event is for those 16 and older. Beginners VERY welcome, but all experience levels can sign up.

This series will take place at Kelley Point Park on Tuesday, July 16, and Tuesday, July 30, both from 6 - 8pm.

In Part 1 the workshop will cover Holga film cameras, how to load them, focus, and take photos in different lighting, and more - all without batteries and electricity! Time will be given to participants to explore the park and use a full roll of film. You will leave the roll of film with Blue Moon to be developed. In Part 2, on July 30, we will review the developed photos, discuss how to improve focus, etc, and then get on the water for a group paddle and to take more photos. At the end of the 2nd class, participants will receive a coupon to develop their 2nd roll of film at Blue Moon in downtown St Johns.

Getting There: For Part 1 we will meet at the farthest parking lot area in Kelley Point Park - look out for the Columbia Slough Watershed Council sign. For Part 2 we will meet at the boat launch, the first left once you turn onto Kelley Point Park Rd. Parking is free in both spaces! Taking public transportation? Bus #11 drops riders at N Columbia Blvd & N Kelley Point Park Rd, a short walk to the boat launch, and ~0.75 mile walk to the large parking lot.

What to bring: Pack along water, any snacks that you might want, and dress for the weather. For Part 2, wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet. We will have snacks and cold drinks to share, Holga cameras and film for all participants at Part 1 and Part 2, and boats, life jackets, and paddles for use in Part 2.

Cost: Columbia Slough Watershed Council will cover the majority of the associated costs of this event including the facilitator, cameras for borrow, 2 rolls of film, and film development. We ask for $20 to help supplement some of these costs. If cost is a barrier to your participation, please do not hesitate to reach out to Amanda!

Accessibility: The group will be navigating flat paved paths, with options to venture onto the sandy beach area or grassy field in Part 1. There is a restroom nearby for Part 1. For Part 2, participants will need to navigate a short dirt/gravel hill to get to the boats, from there participants must be comfortable sitting for ~1.5 hours.
