We invite you to our upcoming Flood Safe Columbia River Webinar!
In partnership with the Columbia Slough Watershed Council, this session will cover information on the flood control infrastructure that protects our region from floods and offer a Q&A with panelists.
Along the Columbia River in Multnomah County there is a century-old flood-control system—hidden in plain sight--safeguarding our region from catastrophic floods. This system includes pump stations, waterways, pipes, drains, and 27-miles of levees. Historic extreme weather events happening around the county and the world emphasize the growing threat due to a changing climate. The results of flooding are known here. The 1948 flood led to breaches of our levees that destroyed the City of Vanport. Upgrades are needed to save lives, preserve water quality, protect the environment, and safeguard workers and their jobs. By raising and bolstering levees, fortifying floodwalls, upgrading infrastructure, and restoring floodplains, we can save lives, protect property, and keep pollution and toxic materials out of our rivers. In 2022, Congress authorized nearly $100 million of federal funds for these crucial upgrades, contingent on local support via a modest bond measure. The "Flood Safe Columbia River" coalition works to raise awareness and enhance our aging flood safety system.
