Did you know that majority of the Columbia Slough’s natural areas are protected from Columbia River flooding by flood control infrastructure that is mostly hidden in plain sight?
Join us for a free, virtual Earth Day Webinar with the Flood Safe Columbia River initiative to learn more about this hidden system, efforts to make this system more resilient against climate change, and how to get involved moving forward. By signing up, you will be entered into a raffle to win an Emergency Preparedness Kit from MCDD!
Flood Safe Columbia River is an initiative to manage flood risk in a changing climate. The Columbia, one of the largest rivers in the country, has flooded the Portland region before and will do so again if we do not take preventive measures. This could be devastating for vulnerable communities and the natural environment. The current flood-control infrastructure is nearly 100 years old and in need of upgrades. Flood Safe Columbia River brings together key community stakeholders, as well as existing drainage districts and a new District Board created by the Oregon Legislature. Its goal is to provide education and engagement on ways to improve infrastructure and manage flood risk into the future.
