Update: Unfortunately, this event has been CANCELLED due to permitting issues. We hope it can return another year!
Santa may deliver his gifts by sleigh, but this holiday season you can by canoe! Help us give the gift of habitat to salmon in the Slough! This event helps to create essential salmon habitat for juvenile salmon in the Columbia basin. Juvenile salmon need coarse woody debris (your holiday tree with all the tinsel and lights removed!) for habitat as it provides shelter and food.
Our expert paddle team volunteers will guide your family and your trees through the Slough to where we are constructing the habitat. Once there, you will toss your tree into the Slough with a bit of guidance then we’ll head back to land. When you’re not on water, we’ll have staff members leading park tours and a stewardship activity. We’ll have coffee, hot chocolate, and delicious snacks too!
What to bring: We will be on the water so dress warmly! Hats, gloves, extra layers. Please check the weather and bring a waterproof layer if it looks like rain. Bring your tree if you'd like to donate it to the cause!
What WE will bring: Boats, trees, gloves, tools, breakfast snacks & warm beverages!
Location: Kelley Point Park. Meet at the gravel lot for the canoe launch, about 300 ft after the turn onto Kelley Point Park Rd. Park by orange cones upon arrival. Please give yourself extra time to find the launch and park.
Accessibility: This event will involve bending and stooping to dig and plant on soft, uneven ground. All are welcome, regardless of ability level. A porta potty will be available on site.
Transit: Trimet Line #11 will drop you off at Simonds and N Lombard. From here, walk N less than 1/4 mile and go left on N Kelley Point Rd. Continue 1/4 mile until the first parking lot.
