Intro to Dragonflies

  • Whitaker Ponds 7040 Northeast 47th Avenue Portland, OR, 97218 United States (map)

We’re teaming up with the Bird Alliance of Oregon and Thomas Meinzen of Friends of Trees for an evening of dragonflies (v: dragonfly-ing). Thomas will give us the inside scoop on the estimated 22 dragonflies that make an appearance throughout Whitaker Ponds!

We’ll introduce you to the life history and ecology of these amazing flying mosquito-eaters, seeking skimmers and saddlebags, darners and dancers, pondhawks and meadowhawks, and more! Through binoculars, the technicolor wonder of these fascinating creatures really pops! Of course, we’ll stop to admire birds as well. Absolute beginners are welcome.

Getting there: We will meet in the gazebo near the parking lot. Free parking is available at Whitaker Ponds - carpool if possible as space is limited. Bike parking is also available! Taking public transportation? Bus #75 stops at NE 47th Ave and Columbia Blvd. Walk north on NE 47th Ave about 0.25 miles, and Whitaker Ponds Nature Park will be on your right.

What to bring: Bring sun protection and water for the afternoon sun. Moquitos will be present, bring bug spray. Light drinks and snacks provided.

Accessibility: A porta potty will be on site. The group will be navigating around the 0.5 mile dirt path at Whitaker Ponds at a leisurely pace. There is no elevation gain.
