International Dark Sky and Bat Night at Whitaker Ponds

  • Whitaker Ponds Nature Park 7040 NE 47th Avenue Portland United States (map)

In celebration of International Dark Sky Week 2022, join Rose City Astronomers members and Bat Conservation International Ambassadors, Dawn Nilson and Paula Frechen on an adventure around the park to learn about the importance of night sky conservation to nocturnal creatures—and to see some of those creatures ourselves. While on the walk, we’ll stop at spots to listen for bats and other animals, learn to identify a few stars and constellations, and share about what kind of outdoor lighting you can use at home to be more night sky friendly.

Accessibility Note: The path at Whitaker Ponds is flat and fairly smooth, but is partially dirt and gravel.
Bus or Bike: TriMet bus #75 makes a stop at the corner of NE 47th Avenue and Columbia Blvd and visitors can walk north from there to the park entrance. Bike racks are located inside the entrance near the west pond.
