Join Through the Trees Collective, Birdhers, and Columbia Slough Watershed Council for a paddle on the Columbia Slough in celebration of Black Birders Week! Together we’ll explore this beautiful natural area, learn more about the birds that call this place home, as well as learn about the significant local Black history of the wetlands and surrounding areas. This free event is open to those who identify as Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Color of all ages. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.
*This paddle is a part of a series of events hosted by Through the Trees Collective in Portland for Black Birders Week. This event centers Black-Identifying Persons - with the intention of making sure there is space for African Diasporan people to heal, rejuvenate and build community with one another. Please visit their Eventbrite to learn about other events happening for Black Birders Week!
Getting There: We will meet at the boat launch at Smith & Bybee Wetlands Natural Area, located just past the main parking lot - look out for the Columbia Slough Watershed Council sign. Parking is free, but may require a short walk from the main parking lot to the launch area. Taking public transportation? Bus #11 stops on the 5300 block of N Marine Dr, about 0.5 miles from the entrance to Smith & Bybee.
What to bring: Pack along water, binoculars if you have them, and shoes you don't mind getting a little dirty or wet - sometimes the launch in this area requires walking in shallow water. We will have a seat in a boat saved for all participants, as well as paddles, life jackets, and dry bag. Snacks and drinks will be available, as well as binoculars for folks who would like to borrow some!
Accessibility: A restroom is available at the parking lot. Previous paddling experience is not required. Participants must be able to sit for 1 - 2 hours.
