Summer Social Distance Volunteer Opportunities!

Columbia Slough Watershed Council is excited to be opening up under phase 1 guidelines for the following socially distanced volunteer opportunities this summer!

In order to protect public health, we’ve developed safety guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Importantly, everyone must register for the events in order to aid contact tracing, and everyone must complete the quick Symptom Checker prior to participating.

All participants must also wear a face covering while within 20 feet of others and stay 6 feet apart or more from anyone not in your household group. Please register for more safety information, and feel free to reach out with questions.

We look forward to getting outside and helping improve environmental health in our watershed while building community and keeping everyone safe!

Third Thursdays at Whitaker Ponds

Love Whitaker Ponds? In July-September, we’ll be meeting at Whitaker Ponds every third Thursday from 5:00pm-7:00pm to give one of our favorite parks some love. We’ve had to cancel all of our volunteer programming since mid-March, so there’s plenty of restoration work to do! We’ll pull invasive plants such as English ivy and pick up litter.

Want to help? Sign up here and complete the waiver in advance. Registration is first come, first served. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, we’re capping each group at 10, so sign up now!

Great Slough Clean Up

Each year, the Council hosts Great Slough Clean Up, a day when we typically gather to clean up multiple sites along the Slough all at once to make a big impact.

This year, we’re spreading out our impact to clean up two sites on August 15th and 27th, and we’re conducting cleanups on land to allow for social distancing.

Want to join us? Sign up here to participate and fill out the waiver in advance. Registration is first come, first served, so sign up now!

NE Ainsworth Habitat Corridor

Were you one of the many awesome volunteers who came out in February and helped install the new NE Ainsworth Habitat Corridor in the medians between 22nd and 24th Ave? Or, do you live in a nearby neighborhood and want to find out how you can help with ongoing stewardship of the habitat corridor?

We’d love for you to help! In order to sign up, email Stewardship Director, Max Samuelson, and he will reach out to arrange a time to supply you with materials and instructions. The habitat corridor needs to be mulched, watered, and weeded during its first year in order to become more self-sustaining in subsequent years. Check out this handy guide for everything you need to know about helping care for this new neighborhood wildlife habitat.

Email Max Samuelson to get involved: max.samuelson@columbiaslough.org

Thanks for joining us this summer as we care for our watershed safely!
