Return of Explorando! July 2024

It was a vibrant and engaging event for everyone who attended the Columbia Slough Watershed Council's Explorando. Despite the persistent Portland heat, our community's spirit shone brightly. This event marked the joyous return of Explorando since 2019, bringing much-needed community bonding. From children splashing in the water to adults dancing to lively Latinx music, the atmosphere was filled with joy and connection.

β€œThe event was a great success and a demonstration of our community's resilience! It was rewarding to see the community come together and enjoy what the Slough has to offer.” says Maya Hurst-Mayr, CSWC Event Planner for Explorando.

We were thrilled to welcome over 120 participants, supported by more than 20 volunteers and 15 community partners and organizations. Our sponsors included the City of Portland Bureau of Environmental Services, the Urban Flood Safety & Water Quality District, the City of Wood Village, Otak, Oakshire Brewery, Ilani, NAYA, Tin Shed Garden Cafe, and Happy Mountain Kombucha. The event was catered by El Salto PDX, a food truck offering rich, authentic traditional Venezuelan cuisine that was 100% vegan. Their delicious offerings were a hit with everyone, especially the Latinx community.

Throughout the event, DJ Hemsy kept the energy high with vibrant music. Attendees enjoyed a variety of activities, including canoeing, bird watching, nature walks, and a dance class! It was heartwarming to see people connecting and enjoying each other's company in such a beautiful setting.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all the organizations that stepped in to help after raffle prizes were stolen 2 days before the event. Without the support of our community and these dedicated partners, we couldn't have pulled off such a successful event. Thanks to generous donations from local businesses and the community, we were able to offer a larger raffle than originally planned with 10 packages!

Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, and supported Explorando. Your involvement made this event a true celebration of community and nature.
