Queer Community Nature Connection Walk

Join facilitator and educator Jo Linden from Temenos Rising, and Columbia Slough Watershed Council, for a free guided 2 hour nature connection and mindfulness exploration walk at the Columbia Children's Arboretum on Tuesday, May 7 from 6 - 8pm. This offering is for our LGBTQIA2S+ community and is recommended for those 16 and older.

This offering is an opportunity to connect more deeply with our authentic selves, with each other, and with the larger webs of community, humanity, and nature within which we are all nested. By slowing down and being present, we offer our bodies, minds, and hearts a nourishing breakfrom the stress and challenges we are currently facing. This offering offers support in calming the nervous system with reminders to be present to the gift of life. You will be invited to wander, be curious, and open to your childlike wonder and playfulness.

Through a series of guided prompts and invitations, this offering will help participants move beyond the chatter of the thinking mind and find a deeper sense of embodied engagement, enabling access to new ways of being while exploring relationship to self and others. This intentional practice of embodied presence cultivates access to powerful experiences of curiosity, awe, and wonder that are essential for resilient engagement with this era of dramatic change and transformation.

Getting There: Keep an eye out for the Columbia Children's Arboretum sign, just past the school bus yard. When you arrive, walk along the path, away from NE 6th Dr, towards the round-about area to find our group. Parking is free, however limited at the Arboretum. Give yourself extra time to find parking in a nearby neighborhood if necessary. Taking public transportation? Bus #11 will drop riders off at NE Middlefield & 6th Dr, 374 ft. from the Arboretum. Bus #6 drops riders off at NE Vancouver Way & Freightliner/3rd, 0.3 miles from the Arboretum.

What to bring: Pack along water and come prepared for the weather - we will be hosting this event rain or shine.

Slough Science: Providing Habitat and Protecting Invertebrates from Pesticides in Residential Landscapes

Join CSWC for an educational speaker event at Level Beer! Aaron Anderson from Xerces will be talking about providing residential landscapes as habitat for invertebrates. Please join us!

Populations of many invertebrate species are declining, but home gardeners can play an important role in their conservation as yards are well positioned to provide habitat for these species in residential landscapes. We will talk about why these creatures are important and how to create invertebrate habitat year-round at home. We will also touch on the risks pesticides pose to invertebrates at home and across the broader urban landscape (including urban waterways).

About the Speaker: Aaron Anderson works with the public and Xerces staff to reduce pesticide use in residential landscapes, including promoting alternative pest control measures and pollinator-friendly gardening practices. Prior to joining Xerces in 2022, he researched pollinator conservation in urban landscapes, restored habitat for several endangered butterfly species, and worked in insect biocontrol. Aaron has a PhD from Oregon State University.

Forest Bathing (Open to All)

Join Irene Bailey, Program Director of Temenos Rising, City of Wood Village, and Columbia Slough Watershed Council for a free guided 2-hour forest bathing walk at Donald L Robertson City Park in Wood Village. This event is open to all community members, although recommended for those 16 and older.

Forest bathing is a nature connection experience inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku. These immersive experiences offer the chance to break away from the stress of daily life and to find healing and nourishment through intimate engagement with the beings with whom we share this Earth home.

While offering a renewed sense of interconnection with the natural world, forest bathing also allows access to beneficial nervous system states that can support our long-term health and well-being. Research has proven that forest bathing boosts immune strength, improves cognitive functioning, and reduces stress, anger, anxiety, depression, and sleeplessness.

Offered through a series of guided invitations, the walk will help participants move beyond the chatter of the thinking mind and find a deeper sense of embodied engagement, enabling access to new ways of being while exploring relationship to self and others. This intentional practice of embodied presence cultivates access to powerful experiences of curiosity, awe, and wonder thatare essential for resilient engagement with this era of dramatic change and transformation.

Getting There: Parking is free near the City Hall. Bike parking is also available. Taking public transportation? Bus #77 and #21 will drop riders off close to the park.

What to bring: Pack along water, maybe a hot beverage, and come prepared for the weather as the event will happen rain or shine.

Accessibility: No restroom is available at the park (currently under construction). Our group will be walking along mostly flat paved and gravel paths.

This event has a limited capacity. If you register and find later that you are unable to attend, please reach out to cancel your spot. If the event is full, we will create a waitlist.

Stewardship Saturday: Plant Care at Kelley Point Park

Join CSWC and Portland Parks and Recreation for a day of stewardship Kelley Point Park! Kelley Point Park is uniquely situated at the confluence of three water bodies (the Columbia River, Willamette River and Columbia Slough). The park includes over 100 acres of natural area and hosts a variety of wildlife, including beavers, otters, deer, ospreys, and bald eagles. We will be continuing restoration efforts to improve the riparian area next to the Columbia Slough.

At this event we will be lending a hand to mulch our newly planted shrub and tree friends and help them get settled into their new home at Kelley Point Park. This work is particularly important at Kelley Point Park due to its sandy soil and dry summer conditions, making mulching necessary for plants to retain enough moisture in the summer months.

Meeting Location: Follow event signs to the middle parking lot (circled in black on map below). A Google Maps pin is here.

Tri-met: Trimet Line #11 will drop you off at Simonds and N Lombard. From here, walk N less than 1/4 mile and go left on N Kelley Point Rd.  Continue to parking lot.

Enjoy one of the final days of winter with Columbia Slough Watershed Council and local tree and bird expert, Ryan Gilpin, for a free educational walk all about trees. Black History Month Bird & History Walk (for Womin, Trans, & Non-Binary Participants)

Vanport's Force Lake shoreline, circa 1944.

Join Columbia Slough Waterhshed Council, local archivist Marti Clemmons and Han Lyons of Birdhers for a birding and history walk. Throughout the walk, we’ll discuss historical context of the area, Vanport (1942-1948), and Japanese American detainment at the Expo Center in the summer of 1942. This free event is for those who identify as Womin, Trans, and/or Non-Binary of all ages.

What to bring: Pack along water, warm layers, and binoculars. Extra binoculars will be available for those that don’t have their own. *Don't have a warm/waterproof jacket? Reach out to Amanda.

Accessibility: The walk will be ~1 mile along a mostly flat trail. There is no restroom on site. Free parking is available.

Getting there: Follow the road past 11415 North Force Ave to find a larger parking lot. Keep an eye out for Columbia Slough Watershed Council signs. Public Transportation: Bus #11 drops riders off at Marine Dr/Middlefield Rd, a ~0.4 mile walk to Force Lake. Yellow MAX line drops riders at the Expo Center Station, a ~0.7 mile walk.
